Freeway expansion makes our communities safer and more desirable. How? It serves traffic that needs to travel trips with lengths more than just a few miles. Functioning freeways reduce traffic diversion to local and collector streets, making our neighborhoods safer for people walking and people bicycling. Functioning freeways serve people in a variety of economic circumstances by giving them flexibility in their commutes with the freedom of the automobile. Finally, functioning freeways reduce carbon emissions when interchanges and mainline lanes provide for smoothly-moving traffic at all times of the day. Freeways are the foundation of economic activity in every region in the United States, an essential building block of a robust, efficient, and safe transportation system.
